Apologies

Hi folks. This week's listings'll be a bit late. Long week of work and a trip up north made getting the list together impossible. I'm typing this post on my Blackberry seated in front of the Guava and Java in San Francisco International Airport...I wish my thumbs could take the punishment a new posting would require, but alas, you'll have to use the links to the right for now.

Pictured above: Paul Robeson stars in The Emperor Jones, playing at the Billy Wilder Theater this week as part of the UCLA Film & Television Archives's HOLLYWOOD ON THE HUDSON: FILMMAKING IN NEW YORK 1920–39 series. The film initially suffered heavy cuts by censors when it was made, but the bulk of the excised dialogue has been restored by the Library of Congress.

Was it just me, or did the first week back from the holidays drag on endlessly? Here's hoping for a speedier, more enjoyable week two. Mayhaps the loads of available screenings in Los Angeles will help:

SCREENINGS: Monday, January 5 - Sunday, January 11, 2009

Pictured above: Wheelers! AAAGGH! The disturbing and wonderful Return to Oz screens Saturday the 10th at the Silent Movie Theater.

Happy New Year, all! I hope everyone's holiday season was joyous and merry and disgustingly happy. I was able to see friends I hadn't spoken to in years, and was in close proximity to a national news sensation. On Christmas night, I went to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (by the way: meh!) at the Riverview Stadium in Philadelphia. That's correct. The very same theater complex in which someone was shot in the arm for talking during The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Christmas night. No, I was not the shooter or the shootee. In fact, it happened in a different showing from mine. My screening went undisturbed by gunfire, though I heard ushers discussing the situation as we left. Merry Christmas, indeed!

Now that we're all back in Los Angeles, where no one ever shoots anyone (cough), the special screenings are returning in full force. This week's got all kinds of goodness. I'm most excited for the Dennis Hopper directorial double feature at the Aero, but take a look at the lineup and see what strikes your fancy. And for god's sake, leave the guns at home.
